How is it that PHEAA offset my taxes even though I was in a voluntary repayment program and paid for 6 months?
I enrolled in a voluntary repayment program with PHEAA in November of 2012 for my student loan which went into default. Upon making a follow up call, I was told that I needed to make an additional voluntary payment by November 1, 2012 even though everything was set up for electronic debit payments that would begin on November 10, 2012. PHEAA told me that could be entitled to some or all of my taxes if I didn’t make a payment.I explained that I couldn’t do it. I just didn’t have the money. Prior to that I was getting my paycheck garnished which was why I enrolled in a voluntary repayment program in the first place! Well, needless to say, my taxes were off set because apparently that extra payment I needed to make wasn’t and couldn’t be made. My question is, why would they do this when clearly I was in a repayment program? And who decides that an additional payment needs to be made? Is that truely a federal guideline requirement? It makes no sense that a collection agency hired by the US Department of Education, would make an unreasonable demand for an additional payment when you are clearly trying to resolve your student loan debt and you are already struggling financially. I am school teacher who doesn’t get paid much to begin with. My tax returns meant a lot to me. I had plans to use my tax returns to catch up on bills. Now I am back to financial set back again, (no thanks to PHEAa who I thought was an agency that would help me) I am back to living pay check to paycheck and taking out payday loans. How is it that the government cannot seem to grasp the struggles and difficulties millions of citizens are experiencing trying to pay back their student loans?"

I’m a full-time college student who has maintained a decent credit rating, does not currently have any debts to pay and makes sure to pay my bills on time. I have never taken out ANY loans especially not from the internet. Recently I received a call from this company (don’t exactly remember the name) that has to do with Payday Loans and Quick Cash Loans that I owe them $300.00 for a loan taken out back in October 2009. They had my social security number and only the name of the bank I’m with. Then later I got 2 calls from this affidavit department saying I either had to re-pay this money or hire and attorney and take care of it in court. I called my bank and double checked my bank statements from Oct. 2009 even though I knew for sure there was no money wired into my account from a Payday Loan Company at the time for $300.00. This company never ever sent me anything in writing and contacted me all the way in May when this supposedly occurred in Oct. 2009. When I spoke to the first guy and asked him several times to tell me what date in Oct. this occurred he had no answer and when I told him to send something in writing he wouldn’t give me an answer. I’m a responsible individual and keep track of every amount that goes in and out of my account. The company is supposedly located in Brooklyn, NY and the two men sounded Indian but had very suspicious names that I know were not Indian. Can they legally sue me? If not what can they do? Should I be at all worried? Will this affect my credit or my financial standing in any way? P.S. They gave me a case number. The first man I spoke with said the money was wired into my checking account sometime in Oct. ’09 though he wouldn’t disclose the source of it. No useless or stupid answers. Hi, just a few questions to anyone who knows anything about debt settlement. Please answer seriously. Thanks in advance!!!! My husband and I racked up a lot of credit card debt. I would say around $30,000 to $40,000. It got to the point where we couldn’t make our minimum payments. What can I say? We were pretty stupid! Anyways, we started with Care One Debt Consolidation. They wanted a payment of $800/month. This was a lot for us (on top of our other bills – car payments, insurance, etc.) but not too bad because we were not married yet and still living at home with my mom (I just turned 20 by the way.) In March of this year, we got married and I got a better job so that we could afford to move out – just barely afford to move out. Now, with rent and electricity and everything else, we can’t make the huge $800 payment for the debt consolidation. My husband (he is 26) just got his hours cut back due to the winter and the struggling economy. We missed last months payment and called Care One back to see what we could do. They recommended Persels and Associates, LLC to us (supposedly through Care One as well.) They took down our salaries and then subtracted everything that we have to pay every month. Turns out that we can pay $240 a month now. They said that this goes into an escrow account and they negotiate with the creditors to settle. They said that this will take 4 years. Before, I was paying the $800 per month and they said that would also take four years…. So I guess if my math is correct, then I will be paying out $11,520 with Percel and Associates as oppossed to $38,400 with the debt consolidation plan. I know it will effect my husbands credit, but how bad? Is this the same as bankruptcy? I know that they take fees out of your money….that is okay with me as long as it all works out in the end. We can’t make the payments now, so I guess it’s no different???? Anyone heard of this Persels and Associates, LLC? I heard that you can get sued by the credit card companies…..is this true? Anything else you can tell me? I need some much needed advice. Credit is a big deal I know, but my husband is still young – we are not planning on buying a house anytime soon or getting any more credit cards with large balances. We now have $560 extra dollars per month that we can put towards savings, paying down our cars, etc. What are your thoughts? Thank you so much for listening. I am from India. My salary is good. I had taken ICICI Bank Credit Card, 07 years back. There was some fraud committed by bank in my credit card statement. I complained to Bank. Bank admitted it’s mistake. Aggrieved with this credit card fraud, I decided to close my credit card account. I talked to bank, regarding this. They subtracted additional amount due to fraud from total amount and asked me to pay certain amount. I paid that amount and got No dues letter from bank. They have replied that they are looking in my matter with priority and update status soon. Every 10 days they send reply like this and are doing nothing. Why are declining birth rates seen as a bad thing?
Countries like Japan and Singapore have declining birth/fertility rates and they have been reported as ‘problems’. I have seen some articles about how Japan is meant to deal with its aging population, and the lack of births to make up for the dead, and they were making it out as if this were a bad thing. Similarly, I’ve seen articles about China, especially related to their one-child policy. But why are they seen as a bad thing? I have a high interest rate loan on a truck, I am paying the payments on time and I am thinking about getting something else with a better interest rate. But I found out that car dealerships and finance companies have participation splits when they sell a car and complete the financing. I wanted to know what that means and am I paying for it.
